This trend has also been supported by the increasing number of international residents who choose to build their lives in Japan through work or study. As of June 2023, Japan's foreign resident population reached a record 3.22 million.

Although international marriages are increasing, Japan's rate remains relatively low compared with other major developed countries. In countries such as France and the United Kingdom, more than 10% of marriages are international.
